A resident from Daspoort brought her dog to the Tshwane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) yesterday. The dog was shot by a perpetrator.

“Flooi is everything in my life and she is like a child to me. She came out of the yard by accident and must have wondered off. We heard her terrible yelping as she ran back home and I saw that she was shot” says owner Ms Antoinette Morley. “I am still in shock and can’t believe that someone would be so cruel to shoot an innocent animal” she says.

Dedicated SPCA hospital staff immediately attended to the dog, to make his stay at the SPCA as comfortable as possible, as he was in extreme pain. To alleviate the pain, anti-biotics and pain medication was administered.

“From the X-rays I determined that the one bullet entered the pleura, close to the lung. The second bullet entered the abdomen” says Dr Riana Rosslee of the Tshwane SPCA Animal Hospital. “The most dangerous bullet, which was close to the lung, was removed first. After an hour of struggling in an attempt to find the second bullet, another X-ray was taken to identify the location of the bullet. It was found floating in the abdomen which was difficult to remove. I had to consider anaesthetic time and therefore closed up the wound. The dog is recuperating well in the hospital” she says.

“The Tshwane SPCA is of the opinion that the shooting of a pellet gun constitutes a criminal offence in terms of the Animal Protection Act, 1962 (Act No 71 of 1962). Any person found guilty shall be liable for prosecution and if convicted, could face a fine or imprisonment” says Rick Allan, Managing Director of Tshwane SPCA.

He furthermore said that air rifles no longer need to be licensed as firearms but they can still not be discharged in a built-up area. Advocate John Welch, former Deputy Attorney General of the then Transvaal Province and now a top prosecutor has stated that the law makes no difference between discharging a pellet gun and a real firearm in suburban areas. “Do either and you go to jail” was his message.

“The Tshwane SPCA wishes to thank members of the public for assisting us in reporting animal cruelty” says Elsa Daniels, Marketing Manager of Tshwane SPCA. “Thank you for being our eyes”.

What should you do if you see or learn of cases of cruelty?

  • Firstly, if the cruelty is something that can be stopped immediately, then stop it. If for example, a horse or a dog is being unmercifully beaten, intervene if you can safely do so.
  • Of course, the sort of person who would mistreat an animal this way would be quite likely to vent his anger to anyone who interferes, and members of the public should use discretion.
  • Few occasions arise when a camera is readily available, but if there should be one, photographs are useful evidence.
  • Inform the SPCA immediately

Before doing so, be ready to give as much of the following information as possible:

  • Your name, address and telephone number. This is necessary for record purposes and also enables the Inspectorate to inform you of the result of his/her investigation. It is stressed that the policy of the SPCA is to treat all complaints in strict confidence. Names of complainants are divulged to nobody unless such complainant has no objection.
  • The name (s), address (es) and telephone number (s) of the person (s) involved.
  • The date, time and place of the offence.
  • The names, addresses and telephone numbers of any witness.
  • State whether you would be prepared to testify in a court of law.
